Sweet potato plants are vining and create long vine stems. In most cases, a wide expanse of earth for the plant to travel is key. However, due to soil conditions in the area, it was necessary to elevate the plants in raised garden beds. Two long beds were linked by a 10-foot-long arched trellis, preserving easy access between the garden beds while providing additional horizontal space for the plants to grow. I created the trellis using conduit, bolts and nuts, wire, and chicken wire. The bolts stabilized conduit joints and the wire was used to attach the chicken wire. In the picture, young sweet potato plants are visible climbing this structure.
